New season, new rules: the changes explained

Referee whistle

Each season brings a few rule adjustments, and this one is no different. Most are small, but together they change how matches are managed.

Added time is being calculated more precisely, so expect longer second halves. Goalkeepers have a stricter limit on how long they may hold the ball, with a corner awarded against them if they run over.

Talking to the referee

Only the captain may approach the referee to discuss a decision. The aim is fewer crowd scenes around the official and a calmer game.

None of this changes what makes the sport what it is. It does mean coaches, players and supporters have a few new details to learn in the opening weeks.
