How the league table works

Magnetic tactics board

A league table looks simple, and mostly it is. Three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat. The team with the most points at the end of the season is champion.

It gets more interesting when teams are level. Goal difference, the gap between goals scored and conceded, usually separates them. If that is equal too, goals scored comes next.

Why every goal matters

This is why a late consolation goal in a heavy defeat can matter in May. Seasons have been decided by a single goal across thirty-eight matches.

The tables on this site update as results come in, so the standings you see always reflect the latest finished matches.
