Shot-stopping still matters most. But a goalkeeper who cannot pass under pressure is now a tactical problem, because building from the back starts with them.
Coaches want an extra outfield player in possession. That means a goalkeeper comfortable receiving the ball with an opponent closing in, and brave enough to play through the first line.
Risk and reward
It does not always work. Mistakes in this role are punished immediately and remembered for a long time. The best keepers accept that, and keep playing the same way.
Watch where the goalkeeper stands when their team has the ball. It tells you a lot about how the whole side wants to play.
